The elevation of the present days snow-line (firm-line on the glaciers) at Mt Kenya is difficult to estimate
due to seasonal and annual fluctuations, and due to the strong effect of topography. The greater insolation and the best climbing time  on east and south facing slopes during the January-March
ablation season, when the western slopes are protected by the afternoon cloudiness, and the sun is in the southern hemisphere. Snow-fields survive longest on the north-facing slopes between Point Lenana and Nelion, on the north side of the go-between the Gorges and Hobley valleys, and on the north side of the ridge linking Shipton Peak and Point Lenana Similarly, even towards the end of the ablation season, when large areas of the Lewis, Tyndall and Darwin Glaciers are free of snow, the north-facing glacier are either still completely snow covered or nearly so. The small amount of retreat of the Northey and Krapf Glaciers since the deposition of the stage VI moraines compared to the other glaciers, is due to their occurrence in steep sided circuit

Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.

Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, before continuing for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and our night’s rest. Afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10 minute walk to the “Temple” is well worth the effort.  This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying. An early night is recommended as you are attempting the summit next day.
