Loita Hills
About Loita Hills
The Loita Hills are a pristine, forested mountain range in southern Kenya, forming the eastern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Known to the Maasai as Naimina Enkiyio ('The Forest of the Lost Child'), this area is one of the last remaining indigenous forests in Kenya and holds immense cultural significance as a sacred site for the Maasai people. The hills are rich in biodiversity, home to elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rare bird species. The landscape transitions from montane forest to open grassland, offering stunning views over the Rift Valley and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro. The Loita Hills remain off the typical tourist trail, providing an authentic cultural and wilderness experience.
