Overview

The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular camping route, known as the 'Whiskey Route' for its tougher, more rewarding character compared to the Marangu. The 7-day itinerary traverses spectacular and varied terrain -- from dense rainforest through moorland, across the Shira Plateau, past the towering Lava Tower, up the famous Barranco Wall, and through alpine desert to the summit. The 'walk high, sleep low' profile provides excellent acclimatization, delivering summit success rates of 85-90%.

Drive from Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m). After registration, begin trekking through dense tropical rainforest rich with birdlife and primates. The trail climbs steadily for 5-6 hours to reach Machame Camp (2,835m) on the edge of the moorland zone.

A critical acclimatization day. Trek east toward the massive Lava Tower (4,630m), a volcanic rock pinnacle, where you stop for hot lunch. Then descend steeply to Barranco Camp (3,950m). Although you end at nearly the same altitude as morning, climbing to 4,630m and descending builds vital acclimatization.
