Kilimanjaro Machame Route (Whiskey Route)
Kilimanjaro's most popular and scenic camping route with diverse terrain and 85-90% summit success.
Overview
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular camping route, known as the 'Whiskey Route' for its tougher, more rewarding character compared to the Marangu. The 7-day itinerary traverses spectacular and varied terrain -- from dense rainforest through moorland, across the Shira Plateau, past the towering Lava Tower, up the famous Barranco Wall, and through alpine desert to the summit. The 'walk high, sleep low' profile provides excellent acclimatization, delivering summit success rates of 85-90%.
Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m). After registration, begin trekking through dense tropical rainforest rich with birdlife and primates. The trail climbs steadily for 5-6 hours to reach Machame Camp (2,835m) on the edge of the moorland zone.
Activities
Leave the rainforest and ascend through moorland and heather to the Shira Plateau. The 5-6 hour trek crosses a rocky ridge with increasingly panoramic views. Arrive at Shira Camp (3,840m) on the vast volcanic plateau beneath the western face of Kibo.
Activities
A critical acclimatization day. Trek east toward the massive Lava Tower (4,630m), a volcanic rock pinnacle, where you stop for hot lunch. Then descend steeply to Barranco Camp (3,950m). Although you end at nearly the same altitude as morning, climbing to 4,630m and descending builds vital acclimatization.
Activities
Start the day with the iconic Barranco Wall scramble -- a steep, non-technical climb up a 257-metre rock face that is one of Kilimanjaro's most memorable moments. Continue through undulating terrain across several valleys to reach Karanga Camp (3,995m) for lunch and afternoon rest.
Activities
A shorter 3-4 hour trek across barren alpine desert to the summit base camp at Barafu (4,640m). Arrive by lunch, rest, and hydrate through the afternoon. Your guide will brief you on the summit attempt. Eat an early dinner and try to sleep before the midnight wake-up call.
Activities
Depart at midnight by headtorch, climbing steeply through volcanic scree toward Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. Arrive at sunrise for extraordinary views, then continue 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After summit photos, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m). A demanding 12-16 hour day.
Activities
Final 3-4 hour descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Collect your summit certificate, say farewell to your mountain crew, and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
