Guided by local Maasai warriors, this experience offers a unique blend of cultural immersion and adventure, far from the crowds of the national parks. You will walk through the sacred Naimina Enkiyio Forest ('Forest of the Lost Child'), visit a waterfall, summit the highest point in the hills, and learn about the Maasai's deep connection to their land. Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Nairobi at 07:00 and drive west, crossing the Great Rift Valley with a stop at the scenic viewpoint. Descend to the valley floor and continue through the small trading town of Narok, the gateway to Maasailand. From Narok, the road winds south into the forested Loita Hills, close to the Tanzanian border. You are dropped at Maji Moto (Swahili for 'hot water'), where a natural hot spring bubbles at the foot of the hills. Here, you will be welcomed by your Maasai guides and crew. After a relaxing soak in the hot spring, a short walk (approx. 1-2 hours) takes you to your first camp. Settle in, meet the donkey team that will carry the camp equipment, and enjoy your first evening with a traditional dinner under the stars.
Activities
After breakfast, the donkey caravan is loaded, and you begin your hike into the heart of the Loita Forest, locally known as Naimina Enkiyio ('The Forest of the Lost Child'). The trail winds through ancient indigenous woodland, a sacred place for the Maasai. Your guides will point out medicinal plants, animal tracks, and explain the cultural significance of the forest. The walk to Oltyiani, the highest point in the Loita Hills, takes approximately 5-6 hours. The route offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and the Rift Valley beyond. You will stop for a scenic picnic lunch with a spectacular view. Arrive at Oltyiani Camp in the late afternoon, where you can watch the sunset over the Great Rift Valley.
Activities
Today's walk takes you along the forested ridges of the Loita Hills. You will visit a hidden waterfall, a sacred site for the local community, where you can take a refreshing break. The terrain opens up to offer panoramic views of the Maasai plains below. You will cross paths used by elephants and other wildlife, learning about the forest's role as a vital wildlife corridor between the Maasai Mara and Amboseli ecosystems. The walk is about 5-6 hours, allowing for plenty of stops to take in the scenery and for photography. Your camp for the night is set up in a beautiful glade surrounded by ancient trees.
Activities
An early start for the most rewarding day of the trek. You will ascend to Osupuko, the summit of the Loita Hills at approximately 2,640 meters (8,660 ft). The climb is steep but the views from the top are unparalleled. On a clear day, you can see Lake Magadi, the Ngong Hills, Lake Natron in Tanzania, and the distant peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. After celebrating at the summit, you begin your descent towards the Great Rift Valley floor. The trail follows an old cattle track down through the escarpment, offering a different perspective of the landscape. The total walking time is about 6-7 hours. You will camp at Njoroi Camp, with excellent views of the valley below.
Activities
After a final breakfast in the hills, you will descend the last section of the escarpment to Enkomongo, a small town on the valley floor. This final walk takes about 3-4 hours through small farms and open savannah. Here, you will bid farewell to your Maasai guides and the donkey team. You will be met by your vehicle for the transfer back to Nairobi. The drive takes you via Lake Magadi (a stunning soda lake) and the Olorgesailie prehistoric site, known for its wealth of fossil remains. You will arrive back in Nairobi in the late afternoon, with a lifetime of memories.
