Ol Doinyo Lengai
The world's only active carbonatite volcano -- a sacred Maasai mountain at 2,962m.
About Ol Doinyo Lengai
Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning 'Mountain of God' in Maasai, is the world's only active carbonatite volcano, rising to 2,962 metres above the Rift Valley floor near Lake Natron. Its unique lava is the coolest and most fluid on Earth, erupting at just 500 degrees Celsius. The overnight trek to the summit rewards climbers with a spectacular sunrise over the Rift Valley, views of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, and the surreal sight of the volcano's active crater. The climb is steep and demanding but non-technical.
