Beyond the mountain: five Kenya adventures that aren't Mount Kenya

Cycling beneath Hell's Gate cliffs, waterfalls in the Aberdares, red elephants in Tsavo - five trips for the days around your climb.

Most of our climbers land in Nairobi with a spare day or three around the trek. Here is what we actually recommend doing with them.

1. Cycle through Hell's Gate

One of the very few Kenyan parks you can explore by bicycle, riding beneath sandstone cliffs past zebra and giraffe, then hiking the water-carved gorge. The landscape inspired the Pride Lands of The Lion King. An easy day trip from Naivasha.

2. Chase waterfalls in the Aberdares

Misty moorland, bamboo forest, and falls that drop hundreds of metres - including Karuru Falls (273 m), Kenya's tallest. Cool, green and quiet: the perfect active recovery after summit day.

3. Meet the red elephants of Tsavo

Kenya's largest park, famous for elephants dusted terracotta-red by its soil, plus the Mzima Springs hippo pools and the biggest sense of wilderness in the country.

4. Photograph elephants under Kilimanjaro in Amboseli

The classic frame - big tuskers in the foreground, Africa's highest mountain behind. Morning light is best, and the swamps keep wildlife close all day.

5. See a million flamingos (on a good year) at Lake Nakuru

A compact rift-valley park that pairs flamingo shallows with one of Kenya's most reliable rhino sanctuaries. Easily combined with Naivasha and Hell's Gate.

All five run as short add-ons before or after a climb - browse the safari and day-trip range →, or just tell us how many days you have.
