Marangu route is commonly known as “cocacola” route.and the only route that can be climbed in 5 or 6 days depending on the hikers fitness.it is olso termed as the oldest and most well established route to kilimanjaro.marangu route is the only route that has hut accommodation,and mostly climbed in fewer days than the other routes,when summiting in marangu route you have to pass through kibo to gilmans point,to reach to uhuru peak the highest peak in mount kilimanjaro.

The marangu route of kilimanjaro is the only route that you can climb up and same way down “ascent and descent down” therefore hikers may experience the traffic,the success rate in the marangu route is lower than the other routes of climbing kilimanjaro.

Day 1 Marangu route 6 days – Marangu Gate (1980m) – Mandara Hut (2700m) # cocacola route

  • Hiking time: 3-4 hours dist 12 kilometers

After breakfast from your hotel moshi,drive to the marangu gate,1980m.whereby the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike.

after finishing with the park formalities,begin your ascent into the rainforest. During this section of the hike, you should expect rain, mud, and fog. Also, be on the look out for wildlife, including Colobus monkeys! the hikes take you 3 to 4 hours to mandara hut 2700m.the mandara hut can accomodate a total number of 60 hikers,and with the solar lightning for camera and phone charging.dinner and overnight at the huts.

Day 2 Marangu route 6 days – Mandara Hut (2700m) – Horombo Hut (3720m)

  • Hiking time: 6 hours Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers.

After the breakfast,hikers will begin their ascent out of the rainforest and into the heathen moorland where they will pass at Maundi Crater and are able to climb up to its rim for a spectacular view of the Kibo Crater. different exotic plants like Giant lobelia and groundsel grows in this altitude.the hut accomodation on the second day is horombo hut with an altitude of 3720m and located in a small plateau

Day 3 Marangu route 6 days – Horombo Hut (3720m) – Acclimatization day

The third day is meant for acclimatization,whereby hikers will have a day hike to Mawenzi Hut (4600m) with their picnic lunch.

Day 4 Marangu route 6 days – Horombo Hut (3720m) – Kibo Hut (4700m) Hiking time: 6 hours

  • Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers :
  • Habitat: Alpine desert
  • The walking is on the alpine desert and hikers may choose on the two different route :the upper route or the lower route which is the more popular route because it is a shorter hiking distance but both of the route leads to kibo hut 4700m,water is scarce in this route,therefore it is advisable for the hikers to carry their own water or buy it at the camp.dinner is served early in order to get ready for the next morning summit

Day 5 Marangu route 6 days – Summit Attempt Kibo hut (4700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m)

  • Horombo Hut (3720m) Hiking time: 8 hours to Uhuru and 6 hours to HoromboDistance: Approximately 6 kilometers ascent and 21 kilometers descent
  • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped

wake up at around  23:30 for tea and biscuits. for summit attempt.The trail is rocky up to Hans Meyer Cave (5150m). You continue your ascent to Gillman’s point (5681m). Reaching this section is an impressive achievement as the trail is steep, rocky, and at high altitude. Gillman’s is located on the crater rim. From this point, you will usually experience a snow covered trail until you reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and drinking tea before the descent to Barafu begins. The hike down to Kibo Hut takes about 3 hours.At Kibo Hut, you will rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. After eating, you will continue descending down to Horombo Hut (3720m). You will have a dinner, wash, and rest soundly at the hut after a strenuous day.

Day 6 Marangu route 6 days – Horombo Hut (3720m) – Marangu Gate (1980m)0

  • Hiking time: 6 hours Distance:
  • Approximately 27 kilometers

after breakfast, have a cheer up,celebration with the staff,with dancing and singing together and tipping followed to the clues,after descend  for a 6 hours walk back to Marangu Gate (1980m) to receive certificates of completion.

Hikers who reached Gillman’s Point (5681m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.drive back to Arusha for long overdue showers and more celebrations
